Synopsis | Despite vaccination, there are several groups of patients that may still be at risk of severe COVID-19 disease. What are the treatment options available for these vulnerable group of patients? Are monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) the answer to this unmet need? Infectious Disease specialist, Dr Leong Hoe Nam, who is currently practising at Rophi Clinic, will provide his perspectives on the role of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in COVID-19 and the practical considerations that should be made. | ||

Faculty | Dr Leong Hoe Nam, Singapore
Dr Leong Hoe Nam is an Infectious Diseases Physician. He graduated from NUS in 1996 and obtained his MRCP and M Med in 2001. Thereafter, he began his advanced specialist training in infectious diseases. Dr Leong further pursued his interest in virology at the Royal Free and University College Medical School, London under a fellowship awarded by the National Medical Research Council. In 2008 he was awarded a second research fellowship to train at the University of Columbia, New York, on emerging pathogens. |

Summary | BD will be organizing a meet-the-expert session on 20th Aug 2022, 2.15pm – 3.15pm @ Orchard Hall – 405B, Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre in collaboration with APICS 2022. We have invited Prof Huang Chien-Hua from the National Taiwan University Hospital and A/Prof Chia Yew Woon from Tan Tock Seng Hospital to share their experiences in implementing national guidelines and protocols within their hospitals and the challenges they faced in doing so. Additionally, we will also have Mr Nguyen Van Hoan from Vietnam National Children’s Hospital to share his experiences in his daily practice in the ICU as well. Join us to find out more! | |
Faculty | Professor Huang Chien-Hua, Taiwan Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital Clinical Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, Medical College, National Taiwan Hospital Prof Huang attained his medical doctor degree from Medical College of National Taiwan University. After completing his residence training in internal medicine and fellowship training of cardiovascular medicine, Dr. Huang received full resident training of emergency medicine in National Taiwan University Hospital. Dr. Huang then entered Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine and got his doctorate degree. He received a grant supporting post-doctorate research in Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He is currently the Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the National Taiwan University Hospital. His major research interests include acute cardiac care, resuscitation and post-cardiac arrest care including targeted temperature management. Dr. Huang has more than 100 publications including clinical and laboratory studies. He has received awards from the fields of academic research, teamwork management and administrative works in these years. His recent interests focuses on Machine Learning to improve the clinical management of cardiac arrest and post-cardiac arrest syndrome. |

A/Prof Chia Yew Woon, Singapore Director, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Intensivist Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore Chairman, Singapore National Targeted Temperature Management Workgroup A/Prof Chia Yew Woon is a dually trained Cardiologist and Intensivist and is currently Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. He is also Vice-President of the Society of Intensive Care Medicine (Singapore) and Board Member of the Chapter of Intensivists. One of A/Prof Chia’s interests is in improving the ICU management of post-cardiac arrest patients, to increase the number of neurologically-intact survivors. He is a strong advocate for a comprehensive post-cardiac arrest care bundle and as Chairman of the Singapore National Targeted Temperature Management (TTM) Workgroup, he has led the development of local guidelines on post-cardiac arrest management in the ICU. He has also been leading educational efforts and lectured widely in this field both locally and in the region and is the Singapore National Investigator in a number of cardiac critical care studies in this area. |

Mr Nguyen Van Hoan, Vietnam Nurse Manager, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Department, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital Lecturer, Hanoi Medical University Mr Nguyen Van Hoan currently holds a positions as a Nurse Manager in Pediatric Intensive care unit in Vietnam National children’s hospital in Hanoi, leading pediatric hospital for the whole of Vietnam. He is passionate in evidence-based nursing practices and transferring these practices to the next generation of nurses. He also holds a lecturing post in Ha Noi Medical University faculty of Nursing. |

Dr Shum, Chief of Service of the Department of Intensive Care, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. After graduated from the Medical School of the University of Hong Kong in 1998, Dr Shum started his Internal Medicine training and obtained his fellowship in Nephrology, Advanced Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. Dr Shum’s research interests are extracorporeal blood purification techniques, septic acute kidney injury, and infectious disease management. He has authored or co-authored > 100 publications on critical care, nephrology, and infectious disease-related topics. He is currently the Hong Kong Society of Critical Care Medicine chairman, co-chair of the Hong Kong ICU outcome-monitoring program and the Critical Care Nephrology Course director in Hong Kong. |

Synopsis | Weaning from mechanical ventilation has evolved over the past few decades. Successful weaning of the patients from invasive mechanical ventilation is critical to the patient’s recovery process and outcome. Weaning practices vary internationally. For hospitals with limited resources and staffing issues, weaning success is even more challenging.
