Message from Organising Chair
In 2020, we made the painful but necessary call to postpone SGANZICS. In retrospect, it proved to be the right decision, as the pandemic ravaged the globe and made holding a live international medical conference impossible. We are immensely grateful to our delegates and industry partners for your understanding and for supporting our decision back then.
Nevertheless, it was precisely in the throes of a pandemic that there was a pressing need to access updated and distilled medical information. We anticipated tremendous demand from the intensive care community in the region for a quality intensive care conference, in a year where travel and social gatherings were severely curtailed. In response, SICM launched a virtual conference, the Asia-Pacific Intensive Care Symposium (APICS). Although this was put together in a much shorter time frame and was smaller in scale than the SGANZICS, the response exceeded our expectations, garnering around 3000 registrations, and more importantly great feedback for the quality of the talks. The event featured many notable local, regional and international opinion leaders in the field, and attracted significant attendance from the world over. SICM is grateful for the immense support we continue to enjoy from all in the critical care community.
Looking ahead, SICM and our partners ANZICS have assessed that it is too early to resume a live conference in 2021. There are uncertainties relating to delegate numbers, travel restrictions and event protocols that would make an international conference unviable. However, in partnership with ANZICS, we are excited to bring you ‘APICS 2021 by SICM and ANZICS’.
Over the years, SGANZICS has grown significantly in its program and reach, and it is no exaggeration to say it is a full-fledged regional ICU conference of Asia-Pacific. As it is, the current line-up of speakers is an impressive list of thought leaders in critical care from the world over. The evolution to APICS is a natural step forward that will properly reflect the conference’s status, and position it for further growth in the years ahead.
We can’t wait to meet you all in person again as soon as conditions allow, but in the meantime, we will continue to bring you the high-quality content and excellent delegate experience you have come to expect from SICM and ANZICS through APICS 2021.
