Synopsis Despite vaccination, there are several groups of patients that may still be at risk of severe COVID-19 disease. What are the treatment options available for these vulnerable group of patients? Are monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) the answer to this unmet need? Infectious Disease specialist, Dr Leong Hoe Nam, who is currently practising at Rophi Clinic, will provide his perspectives on the role of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in COVID-19 and the practical considerations that should be made.

Dr Leong Hoe Nam is an Infectious Diseases Physician. He graduated from NUS in 1996 and obtained his MRCP and M Med in 2001. Thereafter, he began his advanced specialist training in infectious diseases. Dr Leong further pursued his interest in virology at the Royal Free and University College Medical School, London under a fellowship awarded by the National Medical Research Council. In 2008 he was awarded a second research fellowship to train at the University of Columbia, New York, on emerging pathogens.

Dr Shum, Chief of Service of the Department of Intensive Care, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. After graduated from the Medical School of the University of Hong Kong in 1998, Dr Shum started his Internal Medicine training and obtained his fellowship in Nephrology, Advanced Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. Dr Shum’s research interests are extracorporeal blood purification techniques, septic acute kidney injury, and infectious disease management. He has authored or co-authored > 100 publications on critical care, nephrology, and infectious disease-related topics. He is currently the Hong Kong Society of Critical Care Medicine chairman, co-chair of the Hong Kong ICU outcome-monitoring program and the Critical Care Nephrology Course director in Hong Kong.

Successful weaning of the patients from invasive mechanical ventilation is critical to the patient’s recovery process and outcome. Weaning practices vary internationally. For hospitals with limited resources and staffing issues, weaning success is even more challenging. Dr. Nguyen Hong Truong from Pham Ngoc Thach Medical School, Ho Chi Ming City, Vietnam will be sharing his novel experience to utilize STmap tool to monitor ST elevation and detect early signs of cardiovascular dysfunction to optimize weaning success.
